A good consultant can come in (physically or virtually) and observe what you are currently doing and any areas that your company is exposed and at risk, then provide you with some action items that can take you to a better security footing.
Some of the common questions:
Question: Is it expensive?
Answer: Can be. A lot depends on the size and scope of your organization and the size of the company you are hiring a consultant from. The bigger names tend to have more overhead, but also some extra resources and experience to draw on. But to answer “is it expensive” - I would ask “compared to what?”
Compared to a data breach? No. Not expensive.
Compared to losing customers due to loss of trust after a security incident? Not expensive.
Compared to lunch? Yes. It’s expensive.
